  2. Judging the quality of information
  3. Directory of Links

Where to start your search for information

Sadly not all sources of information on the internet are reliable and you should be wary of accepting information from unknown sites. We have listed a number of sites that have been recommended to us.  However, for up to date and accessible information we recommend the following three sites:

The main NHS site at www.nhs.uk - this is an excellent site acts as a gateway to all of the NHS online services in the UK.

In particular, you should look at the NHSDirect  online site which has good coverage of many medical conditions and their treatment in the NHS Direct Online Encyclopaedia - click here for the encyclopedia and on the logo below for the main site

We also recommend the Department of Health's website www.dh.gov.uk

You could also look at Health information at your fingertips - Patient.co.uk which is a good source of information for patients.

Judging the quality of information

We thought that some guidance on how to judge the quality of health information you may find on the Internet would be useful.

You may like to look at the following web page Judge: Web sites for health, consumer guidelines which has been developed by Contact a Family, the Information Management Research Institute, School of Informatics, Northumbria University and the Centre for Health Information Quality.   A summary leaflet  is available by clicking here.

Other useful sites concerned with the quality of health information on the web include the following:

Directory

The directory is intended as a useful list of sites that have been recommended to us over an extended period of time.
